For Sotira in the Famagusta District, Larnaca (LCA) is the nearer airport: 45.9 road kilometres and around 49 minutes by car (Rome2Rio, accessed 26 August 2026); the route runs along the A3 motorway (Kapnos Airport Shuttle, 28 June 2026). From Paphos (PFO) it is 166.4 kilometres and 1 hour 58 minutes by car. Year-round direct flights to Larnaca are listed from Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Basel/Mulhouse, and seasonally from Geneva, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Salzburg (route table, Larnaca International Airport, Wikipedia, accessed 26 August 2026). Non-stop flying time on the outbound leg ranges from around 3:00 hours from Vienna to around 4:00 hours from Düsseldorf (flightconnections.com, accessed 26 August 2026); return flights usually take somewhat longer. There is no bus or shuttle service from the airport direct to Sotira.
Larnaca (LCA) or Paphos (PFO)? Larnaca is the shorter journey
For Sotira, Larnaca is the shorter journey. Rome2Rio gives 45.9 road kilometres and around 49 minutes by car for Sotira–Larnaca Airport, but 166.4 kilometres and 1 hour 58 minutes by car for Paphos Airport–Sotira (accessed 26 August 2026). Both are routing estimates without traffic, without picking up a hire car and without a fuel stop. Our own assessment, not taken from the source: from Larnaca, allow around an hour in the car from the moment you leave the terminal; from Paphos, a good two and a half hours.
Larnaca is ahead on direct connections as well, and that can be counted. According to the route table for Larnaca International Airport (Wikipedia, accessed 26 August 2026), seven airports in the German-speaking countries are listed year-round: Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Basel/Mulhouse. For Paphos, the corresponding table lists five year-round Ryanair routes — Vienna, Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Memmingen and Weeze — plus a seasonal Lufthansa service from Munich. From Zurich, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf, no direct connection to Paphos is listed.
To put the destination in context: according to the tourism statistics of the Republic of Cyprus, 4,534,073 tourists arrived in 2025, against 4,040,200 in 2024, an increase of 12.2 per cent. The largest source market was the United Kingdom with 31.8 per cent, followed by Israel with 13.0 per cent, Poland with 8.2 per cent and Germany with 6.1 per cent (gov.cy, Tourism Statistics 2025). The total figure and the change also appear in the CYSTAT press release of 19 January 2026, which can be downloaded directly as a PDF. Our own assessment: with a German share of 6.1 per cent, you should not count on German-speaking staff on the ground.
Direct flights to Larnaca: airlines, distances, flight times
According to the route table for Larnaca International Airport (Wikipedia, accessed 26 August 2026), these non-stop connections exist from the German-speaking countries: Vienna (VIE) with Austrian Airlines and Ryanair, both year-round. Frankfurt (FRA) with Discover Airlines year-round and TUI fly Deutschland seasonally. Munich (MUC) with Discover Airlines year-round; Cyprus Airways is listed there as resuming on 17 December 2026 — an announced date in the future and therefore unverified. Zurich (ZRH) with Edelweiss Air year-round, Chair Airlines and Condor seasonally. Düsseldorf (DUS) with Eurowings year-round, Condor and TUI fly Deutschland seasonally. Berlin (BER) with easyJet year-round and Eurowings seasonally. Basel/Mulhouse (BSL) with easyJet year-round. Seasonal additions: Geneva with easyJet and SWISS, and Hamburg, Stuttgart and Salzburg with Eurowings.
Two caveats about this table. First, the section on Wikipedia itself carries an update notice dated May 2025, so the labels “year-round” and “seasonal” are not maintained continuously. Second, “year-round” says nothing about how dense the service is: for Basel/Mulhouse, flightconnections.com shows one flight a week in August 2026, for Berlin four, for Vienna and Munich seven each, and for Frankfurt ten. Anyone travelling outside the summer months should therefore check the route they want in the airline's booking calendar for the actual travel period, rather than relying on the label in the table.
Distances and non-stop flying times for the outbound leg, according to flightconnections.com (accessed 26 August 2026): Vienna 2,034 kilometres, around 3:00 hours in the air. Munich 2,338 kilometres, around 3:25 hours in the air. Zurich 2,503 kilometres, around 3:20 hours in the air. Berlin 2,512 kilometres, around 3:45 hours in the air. Basel/Mulhouse 2,580 kilometres, around 3:45 hours in the air. Frankfurt 2,634 kilometres, around 3:40 hours in the air. Düsseldorf 2,813 kilometres, around 4:00 hours in the air. The order broadly follows the distance, which speaks for the plausibility of the figures.
Direction is part of the picture. The same source gives around 3:25 hours in the air for the return leg Larnaca–Vienna, against 3:00 hours on the way out, over an identical distance. Return flights to central Europe on this route therefore usually take somewhat longer. All the figures quoted are averages from schedule data; what is binding is the block time in the schedule you have booked.
From Larnaca Airport to Sotira: five options compared
There is no bus or shuttle service running directly from Larnaca Airport to Sotira. Rome2Rio lists five options for the route (accessed 26 August 2026).
Driving yourself: around 49 minutes by car, 7 to 10 euros. That is the portal's overall estimate for this option, not a separately itemised fuel cost. A transfer booked in advance (listed there as “Airport Transfer/Rideshare”): around 49 minutes by car, 30 to 45 euros. Taxi: around 49 minutes by car, 55 to 65 euros — a portal estimate, not an official tariff; agree a fixed price before setting off, or book the transfer in advance. By bus, Rome2Rio calculates the best public option as 2 hours 22 minutes by bus on route 709 with one change for 11 to 19 euros, and the cheapest as 2 hours 27 minutes by bus on routes 709 and 425 for 8 to 13 euros.
Then there is the shuttle with a change. Kapnos Airport Shuttle runs from the arrivals area in Larnaca to Ayia Napa (13 euros per adult, about 44 to 45 minutes by shuttle, around 50 kilometres via the A3 motorway) and to Protaras (15 euros, about 65 minutes by shuttle); both figures come from Kapnos posts dated 28 June 2026. Sotira itself is not served. From there you continue on OSEA's local network: from Ayia Napa on routes 709 or 710, from Paralimni on 701A, 703 or 714, from Protaras on the 703 (OSEA route list, accessed 26 August 2026).
Why the journey is nonetheless usually made by hire car: Sotira is served by five OSEA routes (701A, 703, 709, 710, 714), but none of them calls at the airport, and according to Rome2Rio the best connection with a change takes almost three times as long as the drive. For evening arrivals and for trips with a lot of luggage, your own vehicle is the workable solution.
From Paphos there is no usable public connection: Rome2Rio lists the best bus option as 4 hours 25 minutes by bus with one change for 22 to 50 euros, and the cheapest as 6 hours 4 minutes by bus with two changes for 14 to 18 euros (accessed 26 August 2026). If you land at Paphos, you are better off picking up the car there.
Hire cars: driving on the left, licences, minimum age, prices
Cyprus drives on the left — the Auswärtiges Amt (as of 26 August 2026), the Austrian foreign ministry (as of 26 August 2026) and the ADAC all confirm this. Roundabouts are taken clockwise and overtaking is on the right. For the first drive from the airport it takes some getting used to; a quiet arrival time and an automatic car make the start easier.
Driving licence: the German licence is recognised for tourist stays (Auswärtiges Amt), and Austrian licences likewise (BMEIA). On the international driving permit, the ADAC expressly states “not required”.
Speed limits according to the ADAC: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 65 km/h outside them, 80 km/h on expressways and 100 km/h on motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 per mille, in the south as in the north (Auswärtiges Amt). Anyone who leaves their vehicle outside a built-up area after a breakdown or an accident must wear a high-visibility vest. For children the ADAC states, word for word: “Children up to the age of 12 and under 1.5 m require a child seat appropriate to the child's weight and height.” Both conditions have to apply together, age and height. In addition: “Carrying children under the age of 5 in the front passenger seat is prohibited.”
Minimum age: here the figures diverge. The comparison guide auto-jardim.com gives 21 to 25 years depending on the supplier, while the Paphos hire company PafoRentals writes on its FAQ page “The minimum age limit is 26”. Both statements are documented, but they describe different things: auto-jardim.com the market as a whole, PafoRentals its own fleet. For your own booking, therefore, neither figure is decisive — the rental contract of the supplier you book with is, along with any young driver surcharge.
Prices (as of 10 July 2026, auto-jardim.com, booking four weeks in advance): low season November to March, 14 to 25 euros a day for economy, 28 to 45 euros for an automatic; shoulder season 20 to 35 and 38 to 60 euros respectively; July and August 30 to 55 and 55 to 90 euros. Fuel was at around 1.58 euros a litre in July 2026. All the figures are snapshots from a comparison portal and should be checked before booking.
Public transport: routes, fares, the limits of the system
Cyprus has no rail network; public transport means the bus, and the fares are separated by district.
The operator responsible for Sotira is OSEA in the Famagusta District. Its fares page gives 2.00 euros for a single journey between 04:00 and 21:00, 3.00 euros at night from 21:00 to 04:00, 6.00 euros for a day ticket, 20.00 euros for five days, 25.00 euros for seven days and 50.00 euros for 30 days (as of August 2026). On the bus you can pay in cash only, and notes above 20 euros are not accepted.
Five OSEA routes stop in Sotira. The 710 runs “DERYNEIA (GREEN LINE) – SOTIRA – AGIA NAPA”, the 709 “STROVILIA (GREEN LINE) – VRYSOULLES – FRENAROS – SOTIRA – AGIA NAPA”, the 703 from Dhekelia via Xylofagou, Liopetri and Sotira to Paralimni, Protaras and Konnos, and the 701A between Xylofagou and Paralimni. The 714 links Paralimni via Deryneia, Sotira, Liopetri and Dhekelia with Larnaca and the Metropolis Mall — the only route from Sotira that runs all the way into the city of Larnaca (OSEA route list, accessed 26 August 2026). The airport is on none of these routes.
In the Larnaca area, the Cyprus Public Transport fares apply. Under the Ticketing Policy with effect from 3 August 2026, a single journey on the city network costs 2.70 euros in cash and 2.00 euros with the Motion card, and a night journey 4.70 euros in cash and 3.50 euros with the card; a seven-day pass costs 46.80 euros as an anonymous card and 33.40 euros personalised. Older amounts still circulating online date from before that: on 10 November 2021 the Cyprus Mail quoted 1.50 euros per single journey for the airport route. The operator's fare schedule is the reliable source, because it states the date it came into force and is kept up to date.
City route 425 runs between Larnaca Airport and the city centre. buscyprus.com gives around 20 minutes by bus between the central bus station and the airport, and notes at the same time that the intercity buses do not serve the airports. On frequency there is only an older figure: on 10 November 2021 the Cyprus Mail reported, at the launch of the route, a service every 20 minutes between Finikoudes and the airport, running from about 06:00 until midnight. Cyprus Public Transport announces a denser service for July and August and publishes the timetables separately for each period — check there before you travel.
The intercity connection Larnaca – Ayia Napa – Paralimni costs around 4 euros according to buscyprus.com and takes about an hour by bus. All in all the bus works for day trips; for arriving with luggage it is awkward.
The border with the north: crossings near Sotira and what applies there
The island is divided in practice, and the Green Line can only be crossed at certain points. In its travel and safety advice (as of 26 August 2026, in force since 10 August 2026), the Auswärtiges Amt writes: “Crossing the Green Line is only possible at certain crossing points.” Identity documents are checked in both directions; a passport or a national identity card is sufficient.
Two crossings are within reach of Sotira. Deryneia borders directly on the neighbouring municipality and, according to the UN peacekeeping force UNFICYP, was opened on 12 November 2018 together with Lefka/Aplici; that brought the number of crossings along the buffer zone to nine. Strovilia lies in the British base area and is listed by UNFICYP, together with Pergamos, as a crossing within the base area. Both appear in the OSEA route list as terminuses: route 710 ends at “DERYNEIA (GREEN LINE)”, route 709 at “STROVILIA (GREEN LINE)”. We deliberately do not give opening hours: the figures in circulation come from travel portals, not from an official source.
Driving into the north in a hire car is possible in principle, provided the hire company allows it. At the crossing, third-party motor insurance has to be taken out for the duration of the stay in the north; it does not cover damage to the hired vehicle itself. The BMEIA puts it in the same terms: “For journeys to the north, third-party insurance must be taken out at the checkpoint” (as of 26 August 2026). The BMEIA also points out that the military buffer zone is mined in places.
Permitted by the authorities does not mean permitted by contract. auto-jardim.com notes that many suppliers exclude journeys into the north in the rental contract, and names a single supplier with suitable additional cover as the exception (as of 10 July 2026). On the legal position the official advice is the more reliable source; on insuring the vehicle you have hired it is the rental contract — both apply side by side. If you are unsure, park in the south and walk across a crossing point.
One more point: the Republic of Cyprus treats entry via ports and airports in the north as illegal entry and a criminal offence (Auswärtiges Amt).
How current these figures are, and what remains open
All the figures on this page were collected on 26 August 2026. Prices, timetables and route networks change constantly, so: check against the original source before booking.
Two statements remain expressly unverified. First, the resumption of the Munich–Larnaca route by Cyprus Airways announced for 17 December 2026 — a date in the future. Second, the opening hours of the Deryneia and Strovilia crossings, for which we have found no official source.
On the flight times: the figures come from schedule data on flightconnections.com and are averages. They vary from rotation to rotation and by direction, and return flights to central Europe usually take somewhat longer. The only binding figure is the block time in the schedule you have booked.
Two sources diverge on the airlines: the Wikipedia route table lists Discover Airlines and TUI fly Deutschland for Frankfurt, while flightconnections.com also names Condor. On the question of which routes operate year-round, we consider the Wikipedia table the more reliable source, because it marks seasonal routes separately; for distance and flight duration flightconnections.com is more reliable, because current schedule data is evaluated there. Both have a weakness that we are putting on the record: the Wikipedia section carries an update notice dated May 2025.
One contradiction of substance remains open: the minimum age for a hire car, 21 to 25 years according to auto-jardim.com against “The minimum age limit is 26” according to PafoRentals. Both sides are documented and describe different segments of the market; what is decisive is the contract with the supplier you book with.
The holiday flat Suite 203 at the Flamingo Lake Resort in Sotira is, as things currently stand, due to be ready to move into from March 2027. The travel information on this page relates to the village of Sotira and the Famagusta District, not to a stay that can already be booked.

For winter trips, check the airline's booking calendar.
Is there a direct bus from Larnaca Airport to Sotira?
No. Kapnos Airport Shuttle runs from the airport to Ayia Napa (13 euros, about 44 to 45 minutes by shuttle) and to Protaras (15 euros, about 65 minutes by shuttle); the Kapnos figures are as of 28 June 2026. From there you continue to Sotira on the OSEA local network: from Ayia Napa on routes 709 or 710, from Protaras on the 703, from Paralimni on 701A, 703 or 714 (OSEA route list, accessed 26 August 2026).

By bus the best option takes 2 hours 22 minutes by bus on route 709 with one change and costs 11 to 19 euros. All the amounts are portal estimates, not tariffs — with a taxi, agree a fixed price in advance.
Do they drive on the left in Cyprus, and do I need an international driving permit?
Yes, they drive on the left — confirmed by the Auswärtiges Amt and by the BMEIA (both as of 26 August 2026) and by the ADAC. Roundabouts are taken clockwise and overtaking is on the right. An international driving permit is not needed: the ADAC lists it as “not required”, the German licence is recognised for tourist stays (Auswärtiges Amt), and Austrian licences likewise (BMEIA).
What are the Cyprus rules on child seats, speed limits and alcohol?
The ADAC writes: “Children up to the age of 12 and under 1.5 m require a child seat appropriate to the child's weight and height.” Both conditions have to apply together. In addition: “Carrying children under the age of 5 in the front passenger seat is prohibited.” Speed limits according to the ADAC: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 65 km/h outside them, 80 km/h on expressways and 100 km/h on motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 per mille, in the south as in the north (Auswärtiges Amt). When leaving the vehicle outside a built-up area after a breakdown or an accident, a high-visibility vest must be worn.
From what age can I hire a car in Cyprus, and what does it cost?
The sources contradict each other: the comparison guide auto-jardim.com gives 21 to 25 years depending on the supplier, while the hire company PafoRentals writes “The minimum age limit is 26”. auto-jardim.com describes the market, PafoRentals its own fleet — what counts is the rental contract of the supplier you book with, along with any young driver surcharge. Prices according to auto-jardim.com (as of 10 July 2026, four weeks' lead time): November to March 14 to 25 euros a day for economy and 28 to 45 euros for an automatic; April to June and October 20 to 35 and 38 to 60 euros respectively; July and August 30 to 55 and 55 to 90 euros. Fuel was at around 1.58 euros a litre in July 2026.
What does the local bus cost, and which routes stop in Sotira?
In the Famagusta District, OSEA gives 2.00 euros for a single journey from 04:00 to 21:00, 3.00 euros at night, 6.00 euros for a day ticket, 20.00 euros for five days, 25.00 euros for seven days and 50.00 euros for 30 days (as of August 2026); on the bus you can pay in cash only, and notes above 20 euros are not accepted. Routes 701A, 703, 709, 710 and 714 stop in Sotira; the 714 is the only one that runs all the way into the city of Larnaca. In the Larnaca area the Cyprus Public Transport fares apply: 2.70 euros in cash and 2.00 euros with the Motion card per single journey, since 3 August 2026.
Which border crossing is nearest to Sotira, and may I drive across in a hire car?
The nearest is Deryneia, which according to the UN peacekeeping force UNFICYP was opened on 12 November 2018 together with Lefka/Aplici; a second crossing is Strovilia in the British base area. Both are terminuses of OSEA routes 710 and 709. We were unable to document the opening hours officially and therefore do not give them. As far as the authorities are concerned the journey into the north is possible, provided the hire company allows it; at the crossing, third-party motor insurance has to be taken out, and it does not cover damage to the hire car itself (Auswärtiges Amt and BMEIA, both as of 26 August 2026). Many rental contracts prohibit the journey all the same — the contract decides.
