For everyday life in Sotira, Paralimni is the nearest larger town, with supermarkets, the bus station and the district's general hospital; by our route calculation it is 4.6 road kilometres to the town centre and 5.7 to the hospital. The emergency department there treats all emergencies in the district, and the emergency number is 112. From October to April pharmacies are open on weekdays from 08:00 to 13:30 and from 15:00 to 18:30, and only in the morning on Wednesdays and Saturdays; a recorded message in English on +357 90 901 413 tells you which pharmacy is on duty in the evening. Shops mostly open from 07:00 to 21:00, and in holiday resorts on Sundays as well. On public holidays, such as Easter Monday on 3 May 2027, many places are closed. As of November 2026.
Sotira and Paralimni: where everyday life happens
Sotira is agricultural in character and has been a municipal district of the municipality of Agia Napa since 1 July 2024. For much of what a longer stay requires, however, you go to the neighbouring small town of Paralimni. The district's general hospital is there, as are the bus station with the OSEA information and ticket office and several large supermarkets. According to our route calculation with OSRM, it is 4.6 road kilometres from Sotira to the centre of Paralimni, about 7 minutes by car without traffic, and 5.7 kilometres, about 11 minutes by car, to the hospital. To the centre of Ayia Napa it is 10.4 kilometres.
In Sotira itself, OpenStreetMap lists a pharmacy on Dimokratias Street. What else the village has to offer, from its churches to the small brewery, is covered in the guide to Sotira. How to get to Paralimni and Ayia Napa without a car is described in the guide to buses and taxis.
Supermarkets and the weekly market
For a big shop you drive to Paralimni. There OpenStreetMap lists, among others, branches of Lidl and Sklavenitis on Griva Digeni Street, the Kokkinos supermarket and the METRO store on Leoforos Protara in the Kapparis area (our own query of 6 November 2026). For METRO the operator gives opening hours of Monday to Saturday 07:30 to 21:00 and Sunday 09:00 to 21:00. We have not checked the opening hours of the other stores with their operators; the entries in OpenStreetMap are maintained by volunteers and may be out of date.
There is a weekly market in neighbouring Deryneia. The municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia runs a laiki agora there, a farmers' market where producers sell directly to the public. According to the municipality it is open every Saturday from 07:00 to 13:00; since 27 December 2025 it has been held in a newly built facility with covered sales areas for up to 36 producers. OpenStreetMap places the market on Stadiou Street but gives different hours, 06:30 to 11:00; the municipality's information takes precedence.
What grows in the area can also be seen at its festivals. Sotira holds its kolokasi festival at the beginning of September, in 2026 for the 46th time, on 5 September; kolokasi (taro) from Sotira, a tuber crop, has been registered in the EU as a protected designation of origin since 2016. In Ayia Napa a festival of traditional flavours with an exhibition of local produce took place for the eighth time from 21 to 23 August 2026 (Deputy Ministry of Tourism).
Shop opening hours, Sundays and public holidays
In Cyprus, opening hours depend on the type and location of the shop. According to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, shops are generally open from Monday to Saturday between 07:00 and 21:00, an hour or two earlier or later depending on the type of shop and the area. On Sundays they open later, usually at around 11:00, and close between 14:00 and 22:00. In most holiday areas shops and supermarkets are open until late in the evening and on Sundays too, while some shops still close on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. From 15 June to 31 August an afternoon break from 14:00 to 17:00 is permitted.
On public holidays public offices and banks are closed; banks are also closed on Easter Tuesday, but open on Christmas Eve. Shops have their own list in the shop opening hours law: general shops stay closed on 1, 2 and 6 January, 1 April, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, 1 May, Whit Monday, 15 August and 25 and 26 December. 2 January is not a public holiday, but it is a closing day for shops. On Green Monday, 25 March and 1 and 28 October shops may open. Before Christmas and Easter shops may stay open longer, but they must close at 18:00 on 24 and 31 December and on Good Friday. According to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, many shops in holiday resorts and coastal towns stay open on public holidays as well.
For a stay in 2027 the following public holidays apply: 1 and 6 January, Green Monday on 15 March, 25 March, 1 April, Good Friday on 30 April, Easter Monday on 3 May, 1 May, Whit Monday (Kataklysmos) on 21 June, 15 August, 1 and 28 October, and 24, 25 and 26 December (Deputy Ministry of Tourism). For 2027 the Central Bank also lists Easter Tuesday, 4 May, as a bank holiday. How Easter 2027 is celebrated is described in the guide to Easter in Cyprus.
Pharmacies: opening hours and night duty
Pharmacies can be recognised by their green cross. According to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, almost all branded medicines are available, and prescription medicines require a doctor's prescription. From October to April pharmacies are open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 13:30 and from 15:00 to 18:30; from May to September the afternoon hours are 16:00 to 19:30. On Wednesdays and Saturdays they close at 13:30. Apart from the duty pharmacies, pharmacies are closed on public holidays except Good Friday and Christmas Eve, and also on Holy Saturday and Easter Tuesday, in 2027 on 1 and 4 May.
During the midday break, in the evenings, on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and on Sundays and public holidays, individual pharmacies take turns to stay open according to an official rota, until 22:00 in winter and until 23:00 in summer, and from 08:00 on Sundays and public holidays. After that, the pharmacy on duty can be reached by phone until 08:00 for urgent prescriptions. In the Famagusta district, the rota for October 2026 to April 2027 has two pharmacies on duty every day, one in Paralimni and one in a neighbouring village, often Sotira. For the Famagusta district, a recorded message tells you which ones are currently on duty, in English on +357 90 901 413 and in Greek on +357 90 901 403. Island-wide information is available on 11892, and the lists are also published daily in the newspapers and on the internet; in addition, before closing, every pharmacy displays the names, addresses and phone numbers of the pharmacies on duty in a lit display case.
According to OpenStreetMap there is also a pharmacy in Sotira itself, on Dimokratias Street; within three kilometres of the village centre, OpenStreetMap lists seven more.
Doctors, health centres and insurance
According to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, medical care is provided by the state hospitals and private clinics, supplemented in rural areas by health centres and smaller sub-centres. Most doctors speak English. Private practices usually have consulting hours on weekdays from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00. You can find out which private doctors are on call at weekends and on public holidays on 17000 or +357 22 017000.
The state healthcare system is the General Healthcare System (GHS), known in Cyprus as GeSY (ΓεΣΥ). According to the UK government's information for British nationals living in Cyprus, residents register with the system and with a doctor listed in it; only then is state healthcare accessible, with co-payments for each service (as of 2021). Visitors use the European Health Insurance Card or, if they come from the United Kingdom, the GHIC. What the cards cover and what they do not is explained in the guide to wintering in Cyprus. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism also points out that visitors can use their own health insurance, provided it covers the entire length of their stay.

Stays of more than three months come with registration requirements, which are explained in the guide to wintering in Cyprus, and for remote work there is the guide to working remotely from Cyprus. There is no booking calendar yet; if you are planning a longer period, send us the weeks you would like, and we will get back to you as soon as letting begins.
